Thanksgiving Feast fit for a Dog

OMD! - Oh My Dog! I swear this has to be the cutest, most creative dog toy ever! My hubby and I went to Target last night to get dryer papers and when I am at Target I have to look at everything and anything. I always end up buying more stuff than what I went there for! We went and checked out the new things they had for dogs and found this adorable Holiday Meal dog toys.

Next we have some treats that you can make for your furry friend. Hope you enjoy making them!

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups water
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1 egg (slightly beaten)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup peanut butter (chunky)
3 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
1/2 cup oats
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl mix water, pumpkin, egg, vanilla, and peanut butter thoroughly. In a large bowl combine flour, oats, baking powder, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Mix wet and dry ingredients together and stir well. Spoon into a greased mini muffin pan, making sure to fill each cup completely and piled high. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until firm (but not too brown). Cool completely and refrigerate.
Makes 30 mini pupcakes

Halloween Safety Tips for Dogs

Halloween is vastly approaching and that means tons of awesome costumes and tons of candy! So, I know we all know tips on keeping our pups safe, but I decided I wanted to share a list of Halloween Safety tips for you animal lovers!

Halloween can be a fun time of year for the whole family - even your dog. However, there are also many potential dangers and sources of stress for your dog. Just remember to keep your dog safe from these Halloween hazards.

Halloween Candy and Other Treats
Remember that human treats are not usually good for dogs! Candy - especially chocolate - can be extremely toxic to your dog. Artificially sweetened candy, gum and other goodies may also contain xylitol, a highly toxic substance. Dogs may also ingest food wrappers, causing a risk of choking, upset stomach or gastrointestinal blockage. Various party snacks can be too salty and may contain ingredients that can poison your dog. Alcoholic beverages and dogs do not mix - they pose a significant risk of severe illness or even death! Keep all of these "human goodies" far out of your dog's reach. If you are not positive that you can keep your dog away from these hazards, then consider confining your pet to another area of your home during the festivities. Keeping appropriate dog treats around for your dog can be a great idea, but remember not to overfeed. Sliced carrots or apples (hold the caramel) can be tasty and healthy snack alternatives for people and dogs alike!

Halloween Decorations
Your dog is bound to be curious about new objects around the house, and that includes Halloween decorations. Be sure decorations are not in areas where your dog could ingest them or bump into them. Power cords trip your dog or lead to electrical shock if chewed. Be careful with the placement of jack-o-lanterns - have you ever seen a dog eat a whole pumpkin? It is not pretty! Also, candles can be knocked over, potentially burning your dog and/or starting a fire. Other decorations can be eaten or broken, causing serious harm to your dog. Have fun and decorate - just think about your dog first!
Trick-or-Treaters and other Guests
Though many dogs love visitors, some can become fearful of strangers. Many dogs will even be afraid of people they know if those people are in costumes. Plus, constant ringing of the doorbell might get your dog over-excited or very stressed out. Think about your dog's typical reaction to visitors and take extra precautions for Halloween. Keep your dog at a distance when greeting trick-or-treaters by putting up an baby gate or confining her to another area of the home. When inviting guests into your home, introduce them to your dog in a positive manner. If your dog seems afraid of guests in costumes, remove her from the situation calmly. During parties and loud gatherings, your dog might do best in another area of your home unless she is used to these types of events and has done well in the past.

Halloween Costumes for Dogs
Some dogs really enjoy getting dressed in costumes - they might ham it up and revel in the attention. Other dogs can become scared or uncomfortable in clothing of any type. If you want to dress your dog up, start simple and see how she handles it. If she does not like it, then don't push the issue. Try a Halloween bandanna or collar instead. If your dog does seem to enjoy getting dressed up, be certain you choose a costume that fits comfortably. If it is too tight, it could cut off circulation or cause sores to develop. Loose-fitting outfits can trip your dog or get caught on objects around the house. Because of these potential dangers, never leave your dog unattended in the costume. She could become injured or may ingest parts of the costume and choke, become sick, or develop gastrointestinal blockage.
Outdoor Dangers
I personally feel that unsupervised dogs are best kept indoors year-round, though some dogs will do fine living outdoors alone. However, the rules are different during the Halloween season! It is extremely crucial that you keep your dog indoors unless directly supervised. Sadly, there are cruel people who have twisted ideas of fun this time of year - and your dog can be the victim. Though it is more widely know that black cats are targeted during Halloween, any household pet can be at risk and MUST be kept indoors!

Your dog can be part of Halloween fun if you play it safe. As always, follow common dog safety rules: be certain that your dog wears current identification at all times, keep your dog on a leash when outdoors, and keep her safe from potentially dangerous situations. Have fun, be safe and have a happy Halloween!

Safety Tips: Pets and Bedbugs

Get the facts on protecting your pet from pests.
The bedbug craze continues to catch New York City by storm, with residents reporting an estimated 7,021 complaints of the blood-sucking bugs in the first seven months of this year.
No individual, establishment or building, from recently infested Nike and Abercrombie & Fitch clothing stores to the Empire State Building, is safe from the epidemic. That also includes dogs, cats, birds and all other warm-blooded pets, which serve as prime game for the semi-nocturnal, parasitic insects.
Pet owners can best protect their pets from bedbug bites by ensuring that their homes are bedbug free. That isn’t always possible, though, and if homes do become infested, it might prove more traumatic for the owner than for the pet or pets. What’s ultimately the bigger issue and potential hazard is the pesticide treatments used to eliminate bedbugs, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA. The chemical often used in eradicating bedbugs, called pyrethrin, can be safe if used correctly around pets — but serious illness and even death can occur if it is not.
In 2009, nearly 11,000 calls about bedbugs were made to New York City’s information line, marking a drastic increase from the 537 calls made in 2004. A pest control company recently ranked New York City the most infested city nationwide, according to Linda Rosenthal, a New York State Assemblymember who introduced legislation this year requiring landlords to disclose to prospective tenants any history of bedbug infestation in the apartment building and individual unit within the past year.
“Bedbugs have caused terrible panic, discomfort and financial hardship for those afflicted, but it’s important that people safeguard their pets while the exterminators do their work,” Rosenthal said. “Pesticides can cause grave injury and even death to cats, dogs, birds and other pets, so we have to make sure they are not exposed to this danger.”
The fast spread of the rust-colored, apple-seed sized bugs, which nestle into cracks of furniture, walls, pillows and mattresses and tend to bite people and animals’ shoulders and arms, tends to make people uneasy, but they should first recognize that bedbugs do not live on the body of their host.
“Dogs, cats and other pets, much like humans, cannot carry bedbugs,” said Dr. Tina Wismer, the ASPCA’s senior director of veterinary outreach and education. “You could see bites on them, most likely in their stomach area, depending on how much fur they have, but even if that is the case, there is no need to physically treat your pet.”
Ridding a home of bedbugs, which can usually be identified if not by the blind eye than by their droppings or by little blood stains they leave on mattresses, can be a tricky process that should always include a licensed, professional exterminator. Bed bugs can survive for up to a year without feeding and can adapt to a wide range of temperatures.
Though necessary, the routine pesticide treatment — the New York City Department of Health recommends at least three visits — is the most dangerous aspect of having, and then ridding one’s home of the blood-eating insects.
“You want to make sure you keep pets out of the area where you have people spraying and that the pets do not go into the area until it is completely dried, which is usually a 24-hour period,” explained Wismer. “Animals are really sensitive to the inhalation of pesticides like this but they can also get sick if it is still wet by absorbing it through their skin, or licking it off their paws.”
Dogs and cats typically display symptoms like vomiting and drooling if they have somehow ingested or absorbed the pesticides. Birds tend to puff up, and will usually be at the bottom of their cages, displaying difficulty breathing.
People should not try to treat their homes themselves, Wismer cautions, as this strategy will likely prove both ineffective and potentially more dangerous for both the people and pets in the house. If they do treat their homes on their own, they should always be sure, as always, to read the label very carefully.
The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center fielded nearly 30,000 calls related to insecticides last year, a 5 percent increase from the year before. If your dog or cat is exposed to a potentially toxic substance, contact your local veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center at (888)-426-4435.

Tips on Taking Awesome Pet Photos

Its hard sometimes to capture your furry friends, especially when they want to place while you are trying to take pics of them or they just want to lick you constantly. LOL! My pups did this a lot when I first started taking pics of them, but now from some helpful tips that I read a long time ago I was able to get them to sit still long enough for me to take a good photo of them. First tip - HAVE TONS OF TREATS CLOSE BY!

Here are some more helpful tips:
Like the photo above of Coco licking her lips, you can get this shot by sticking some peanut butter to the roof of your dog's mouth. This way in the shot you can get him/her licking their lips! :-)

I usually set my camera on continuous shooting, so that I can take a ton of photos one right after the other. This way when you are going through the photos and you have duplicates, you can delete which ones you don't like and keep the ones that are fab.

To get their attention, I usually hold the squeaky plastic thing from the inside of toys above my head or right by the camera (that really gets them interested. Don't know about your furbabies, but mine love to chew them up!) If they get bored of the squeaker then I entice them with treats, by doing the same thing - holding it by the camera.

To make the photo less distracting, I really like using a white backdrop. I love the clean cut of a white backdrop behind the pups. For Dolce, since she is white, I use a black backdrop or some color drop, like pink, teal or green.

The studio photos are amazing and I absolutely love they way they look, but I do have to say that my fav is shots of the pups in natural sunlight. Shooting photos of the pups outside in the natural light, gives you so much more of their personality. Action shots are awesome and so playful! You can catch them doing some funny things.

And last but not least, just keep those treats a coming. I'm sure all your furbabies love treats. I use CocoTherapy Coconut chips, Wellness Wellbites and some other goodies!

Sam's Club Haul

OMG, I haven't been to a Sam's Club in ages. So when I saw that we had one here in Wichita Falls - I had to go and sign up for a membership. We went and got some goodies today! EEKKK I love it there. We found some great things to buy for the furbabies, first we got a temper pedic bed for Bruno. He is always crying to get up on the couch with us and there is really no space. Bru absolutely loves the bed. He hasn't left it since we got home. It was $22 and is nice and soft.

Dolce took advantage of it first.

Next buy, we found these amazing buckets. You get 2 for $5 bucks. They are a good size and come in pink, green, teal and navy blue. I ended up buying green and teal. The green ones I am using for the pups toys and the teal ones I am using for laundry! They are the perfect size.

I didn't think that the pup's toys would take up two of them, but they did. GEEZ! Spoiled little butts! LOL!

And I love that my laundry fits in them so perfect!

Doggy Bank

Found this cute doggy bank today at Animi Causa Boutique. He doesn't bark, he doesn't bite and there is no need to take him on long walks. Just feed him with your surplus change now and again and he's happy.

It's a nice large size, 12.5" from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail and stands 8" tall, and looks wonderful on a mantel or shelf. Sculpted to resemble a Balloon dog, it makes a great gift for children or adults. It even has felt pads for the feet to protect any surface.

Nope its not a real dog, but its a cute glowing silhouette of a chihuahua. I totally would love to have a space like this and having the glowing chihuahua would top it off. Back in action - Weekly Recipe

I am finally back! Still awaiting my house stuff to get here, but was able to setup internet at my new house! We have been having an amazing time, being able to hang out with my hubby daily and the dogs have been on base to check out the scenery! So, we will start the week off like we would normally with a Weekly recipe....enjoy!

Humans will enjoy sharing this dish with a salad or your pets. This is one of Rachel Ray's dishes for pets.

Boo-Sotto

Ingredients
2 tablespoons extra virgin oil (EVOO)
3 cloves garlic, crushed
1 small online (to be grated for its juice)
2/3 cup arborio rice
2/3 cup barley
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1/2 cup dry white wine
4 cups chicken broth or low sodium chicken broth, warmed over a low flame
1 pound ground veal or turkey
1 cup grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese (a few generous handfuls)
A handful of flat leaf parsley, finely chopped

Preparation
Pre-heat a deep skillet or wide 4-quart saucepan over medium heat.

Add the EVOO, two turns of the pan, and the garlic, then grate the onion juice into the skillet. Cooke for 2 minutes, then add the rice and barley. Season with salt and pepper and cook for 203 minutes more. Add the wine, raise the heat to medium-high and cook away the liquid, about 1 minute. Add a few ladles of the warm stock to cover the rice and barley, then drop in the ground meat in small bits. Stir frequently and continue to ladle in the stock until the rice and barley are cooked al dente, about 22 minutes. Stir in the cheese, adjust the seasoning and garnish with the parsley.

BUSY BUSY BUSY

Oh, my, who would have thought being a 'lady of leisure' would be such hard work! No days of lounging and eating bon bons for me. As many of you know, I am preparing for a big move to join my husband at his tech school location. It will be so very awesome to be with him again -- these 8.5 weeks have been very lonesome! I have learned much but am totally grateful to my Creator for allowing me to make this huge step in our new journey. I have left my job and am spending my days packing up our household goods and getting ready to attend his graduation ceremonies soon. There is so much to be done and I am truly overwhelmed. I won't be on my blog, phone, or out/about for the next few weeks as I have to ensure that I get everything accomplished, and be ready to hit the road on the date we have scheduled. Muttzo Balls

Ingredients:

1 cup Any natural dry dog food

2 Eggs, beaten lightly
1 tsp. Polyunsaturated oil
1/3 cup Cold water
Sprinkle of garlic powder
1/2 cup Chicken soup OR 2 chicken bouillon cubes
Directions:

Grind dry dog food smooth in a food processor or blender. Lightly beat egg and add oil. Mix all moist ingredients together except soup. Add to dry ingredients. Form into 1/2" balls. In large pan, bring 1 quart water to boiling to which you have added 1/2 cup chicken soup or the 2 bouillon cubes. Drop balls into boiling water. Boil for 3 minutes. Remove from water, drain and cool. Refrigerate.

Healthy Muffins

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups oat flour
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup oat bran
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 egg lightly beaten
1/4 cup honey
3 Tblspn. vegetable oil
3/4 cup of milk
"optional ingredients" : apples/banana's blended together, shredded zucchini and carrots, nuts/raisins ,shredded cheddar/jack cheese or cooked chicken

Directions

Preheat oven to 425. Line muffin tins with foil/paper muffin forms. Mix dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, mix the egg, honey and oil. Mix the milk in with the dry ingredients, blending well. At this point mix your "optional" ingredients into the honey mixture, then mix the honey mixture into the flour/milk batter. Put in muffin tins and bake for 15 - 20 minutes. These muffins freeze well.

Wheatless Tuna Biscuits
Ingredients
1 cup yellow cornmeal
1 cup oatmeal
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1 small can tuna in oil , undrained

1/3 cup water

Directions:

Grind oatmeal in processor to make a coarse flour. Set aside in small bowl. In food processor, whirr tuna with the oil, and water then add all the rest of ingredient. Pulse until mixture forms a ball, Pulse to knead for 2-3 minutes. Knead on floured surface till it forms a soft ball of dough. Roll out to a 1/8"-1/4" thickness. Cut into shapes. Bake on lightly greased cookie sheet, at 350 for 20-25 minutes. Cool completely.

Find out what dangers may be in your home -- and how to keep your dog safe from poisoning.

Accidental ingestion of medications (pet or human drugs), rodenticide and methylaxanthine toxicity (chocolate, caffeine) were the top three sources of pet poisoning between 2005 and 2009, according to Veterinary Pet Insurance, which recently analyzed its database of more than 485,000 insured pets to find the sources behind the hundreds of poisoning claims submitted to the Brea, Calif.-based company every month.

Policyholders spent more than $6.6 million during that four year period treating their pets for poisoning, VPI noted. Accidental ingestion of pet or human medications cost policyholders an average of $791 per claim. Heavy-metal poisoning came out costing the most at an average of $952 per claim.

“Not only can a poisoning incident be life-threatening for the pet, it’s traumatic for the pet owner as well,” said Carol McConnell, DVM, vice president and chief veterinary medical officer for VPI. “Depending on what substance the pet has ingested and the amount, the reaction can be sudden with the animal exhibiting alarming symptoms such as staggering, vomiting, drooling, seizures and even loss of consciousness.

“We recommend that pet owners be aware of which items around their homes can be harmful to their pets—medications, insect poisons, chocolate and certain nuts—and keep these items safely out of reach.

“Also, they shouldn’t assume that their pets will ignore that bottle of bleach in the laundry room or the Philodendron plant by the window. Our data shows this just isn’t so.”

VPI recommends that pet owners be prepared for such emergencies. For example, owners should keep the phone number of their pets’ regular veterinarian and a phone number for an emergency veterinary hospital handy at all times, according to VPI.

Poofy Doggy Drops

Ingredients

1 pkg. dry yeast

1/4 cup warm water

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1 cup flour

1 pkg. unflavored gelatin

1 cup dry milk powder

1/4 cup corn oil

1 egg

6 oz pet food, canned

1/4 cup water

Directions

Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. Mix all dry ingredients together. Add the rest of the ingredients. (Dough will be very stiff.) Drop dough by level half-teaspoons onto un-greased cookie sheet. Bake in a preheated 300 oven for 25 minutes. Leave in over to dry and cool. Store in airtight container.

The other day my friend Aubrey (Coordinator - Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue) and I went down to the Saturday market here in Portland, OR! I love going down there and checking out all the unique booths. We went over to my lovely friends Sayde & Patty (Owners - Doodlebug duds). They showed me these cute new harnesses that they made for our adorable little furry friends. They are so cute. One is a Sock Monkey Harness so adorable! I squealed when I saw this. It is fantastic and fits nice on Armani.

It easily slides right over the head and then clasps on the side. It is adjustable too, so in case you have a pup that is a little bit on the heavy side you don't have to pass this harness up because you can adjust to fit.

The next harness that they made is a vest like harness. Cute pink flower color, perfect for any little diva pup. Coco is flaunting of her style and loves this harness to death. Easy to put on and secure close with velcro!

Banana Biscotti

Ingredients

5 cups flour

1/4 cup peanuts, chopped

1 egg

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1 1/2 cups banana, pureed

2 teaspoons vanilla

water

Directions

Preheat oven to 325F. Place dry ingredients in a large bowl. Make a well in the center. Blend egg, oil and banana together. Add into the dry ingredients in well. Start combining together. Add water, one teaspoon at a time as needed. Knead by hand on table until mixed thoroughly. Form into logs approximately 2" - 2 1/2" high. Flatten so that log is 6" - 7" wide by 1" high. Place on non-stick baking sheets or lightly greased ones. Bake 30 - 40 minutes. Remove and cool for 10 minutes. Slice into 1/2" - 3/4" slices. Place on baking sheets and bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool. Store in airtight container

Basic Dog Food Recipe
Ingredients
4 cups uncooked rice
9 cups water
1/4 cup oats
1 teaspoon salt

Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan and bring to a boil. Once the mixture is boiling add:

1/2 cup 2% milk
2 tablespoons parsley, chopped fine
3 ounces liver, chopped fine
8 ounces ground beef (or chicken or lamb)
3 tablespoons corn oil
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups vegetables (carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.), chopped fine

Stir, turn heat to low, and cook for about 20 minutes until all water is absorbed. Then spread out in flat Tupperware containers, cool and cut into half cup squares. When feeding, add cottage cheese or yogurt, and 1 tsp. supplement mix per 30 lbs of dog weight:

Sun and Skin Safety: How to Protect Your Pets

Yes, pets get sunburn too! Before you hit the beach this summer, learn how to prevent sun damage.

Romping about in the sun and basking in its warmth is a favorite among all pets, but it is a pastime which owners should regard with caution.

Skin cancers are the most common tumor in dogs, accounting for approximately one third of all tumors, according to CanineCancer.com. Sun exposure can lead to specifically three types of cancer: squamous, basal cell carcinoma and hemangioma, said Dr. Heather Willis-Goulet, a board-certified veterinary dermatologist with Florida Veterinary Specialists.

"Just like humans, pets can also be at risk of developing skin cancer," the Tampa-based veterinarian told Zootoo Pet News. "Exposure to direct sunlight can be significant contributing factor, but it is not the only cause of skin cancer in pets."

The sun's damage does not discriminate, although skin cancer often is found in middle-aged to older-aged dogs and certain breeds more than others.

"Light colored dogs with thin hair coats, such as Dalmatians, Pit bulls, pointers, bull terriers, and hairless breeds have a higher risk of developing skin cancer," Dr. Willis-Goulet said. "Also, pets that are shaved [have a higher risk], whether it is a new summer clip or recently received medical treatment and now have an exposed, shaved area."

But Dr. Willis-Goulet says sunburn can strike cats -- even those who are indoor pets -- particularly white cats who might like to sunbathe in windows.

Pet owners should also be careful with "sun worshippers," those pets she describes as loving to sunbathe on their backs exposing their bellies.

Other vulnerable areas, which have low pigmentation, include: bridge of the nose, ear tips, skin around the lips.

Dr. Willis-Goulet strongly suggests owners apply sunscreen to their sun-exposed pets, citing that typically those safe for babies can be used on pets, "but if they do lick a lot, then it is toxic so you should get one specifically for pets."

But she levied some insight that pet sunscreen labels are not equal to human-marketed sunscreens.

"One of the problems with pet sunscreens is that they don't have a very clear label for SPF's. Some of them don't because the FDA hasn't established and tested these ratings for pets," Dr. Willis-Goulet explained.

Most importantly, though, Dr. Willis-Goulet says pet owners should adjust their mindset about pets and the sun.

"They think because humans can tolerate it, that their pets can tolerate it, too," Dr. Willis-Goulet said. "But a big mistake in thinking is that because your dog or cat has hair that they are not going to get sunburned."

Signs and symptoms of sunburn and sun damage include changes in skin color, redness, and skin changes that look like blackheads. These changes could potentially be pre-cancerous and should be checked by your veterinarian.

Some of Dr. Willis-Goulet's tips:

1. Any time you could get sunburnt, so could your pet.

2. Avoid the peak sun hours -- from 10am to 2pm.

3. Take your dog for a walk at dawn and dusk to stay out of the sun and heat.

4. Apply sunscreen on your pet every 4 to 6 hours and use 1 tablespoon per body area.

5. Keep your pet under an umbrella at the beach.

Dachshund's Noodle Jumble

Ingredients

2 cups of macaroni

2 cup of mixed vegetables (peas, carrots, corn, etc.)

3/4 to 1 lb. of meat (ground beef or chicken)

3 cups of water

1 1/2 tbs. corn starch

2 tbs. olive oil

3 large cloves of garlic (pressed)

Instructions

Add meat and water to pot and boil bring to boil. Let simmer for 15 minutes and strain off meat. Save 1 3/4 cups of boiled stock. Now add water and boil macaroni until it begins to feel soft. Add frozen vegetables and let sit in water for a couple of minutes. Strain noodles/vegetables and turn heat to medium. Dissolve corn starch in 1/4 cup of cold water. Add meat, noodles, vegetable, olive oil, garlic and stock to pot. Stir until mixture begins to bubble. Turn heat to medium low and stir in water/corn starch mixture. Stir in element for a few minutes until it thickens (add more corn starch mixture if contents are still thin). Remove from element and let it cool to room temperature.

Take 1 cup dry measuring cup and scoop out increments onto pieces of plastic wrap. Wrap up and freeze. We will usually thaw one out the night before and split it up into two servings (we add some kibble).

Makes approximately 6 servings.

Had a long stressful day? What could be better then chillaxin' in my new boat, that my human bought me. They picked up this little purple kiddie boat from Walmart. I absolutely love it. Mom put my Juicy Couture towel in there so I wouldn't poke holes in the bottom of the boat with my nails.

We are going to have a big bash here tomorrow; Grandma and Grandpa are here from Washington; Auntie is arriving from Cali tonight and my local buddies are coming over to chow down. I sure hope the humans leave some of those ribs for us! This is my dad's last weekend with us, as he is going off to serve our country as a member of the United States Air Force. We are going to miss him so much, but we are very very proud of him! We will have to be extra special to mom and keep her company while he is away. She will be lonesome!

Prepare your dog for July 4th fireworks

Fortunately, preventing pet problems on Independence Day is possible by simply planning ahead and taking some basic precautions.

"With a little bit of planning and forethought, you can enjoy the excitement of the Fourth of July and know that your animal companion is safe, sound, and enjoying a little peace and quiet," said Nancy Peterson, an issues specialist with The Humane Society if the United States.

To protect your pet on the Fourth of July, take these precautions:

Resist the urge to take your pet to fireworks displays.
Do not leave your pet in the car. With only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects—even death—in a few short minutes. Partially opened windows do not provide sufficient air, but they do provide an opportunity for your pet to be stolen.
Keep your pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you've removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep him company while you're attending Fourth of July picnics, parades, and other celebrations.
If you know that your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety he or she will experience during fireworks displays.
Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn't leave the yard may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or death.
Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Animals found running at-large should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

Sensational Salmon Cakes

Ingredients

One can salmon (6 ounces), drained

1/2 cup cracker meal or dry breadcrumbs

1 large egg, beaten

1/4 red bell pepper, finely chopped

1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

Preparation

In a medium bowl, gently mix the salmon and cracker meal. Mix in the egg, bell pepper and dill. If the mixture is too wet, mix in a bit more cracker meal. Form the mixture into five 2-inch patties.

In a medium skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the salmon cakes and cook until golden-brown, 3-4 minutes on each side. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Let cool before serving to your pup.

Once upon a time, Debbie Wiener understood why people shooed their pets off the upholstery. She, too, cared more about how her home looked than how it functioned.

But she found herself cleaning endlessly because she lived in a house full of slobs — a husband, two sons and a "chubby, large-scale Yorkie" named Daisy, who vomited often. "I would return home with dread," Wiener tells PEOPLEPets.com of facing the mess.

So Wiener, an interior designer from Silver Spring, Md., decided that slob-friendly furniture was what her home needed. She recently launched a line of upholstered furniture, Slobproof, made with Crypton mess-repelling fabric.

Though there are abundant options for pet furniture — dog beds and cat condos— "this is furniture for the pet lover," says Wiener.

Crypton fabric, which was originally used in institutional settings, repels water, food, drool, mud and worse. Its moistureproof treatment is woven in at the fiber level rather than sprayed on afterward. But the fabric's stiffness made it less than comfy.

Wiener helped the company develop a fabric with "a better hand and a softer feel" — one that people and their pets would enjoy sitting on, lying on and even wiping their feet on. She demonstrates its properties by squirting on ketchup and chocolate sauce, then successfully sponging off the mess. Upholstered chairs range from $490 to $1,175, while sofas range from $1,399 to $2,500.

Wiener's clients tell her that with Slobproof furniture, their pets are welcome in formerly off-limits rooms. No longer are the animals relegated to unhappily "whining in the hall" behind closed doors, Wiener says. "This is furniture both humans and animals can enjoy."

Hide treats in the depressions under the sliding discs, let your dog look for the goodies by trying to pull the discs to the side with its paw or nose.

Suggestion… Increase the degree of difficulty by placing the white plastic blocks in the depressions in the middle of the dog Brick. Puppy Popsicles:

If you have an ice cube tray you can make puppy Popsicles.

Boil up some chicken or beef bouillon in a pot. Make certain it is plain bouillon and does not contain any spices or additives. Generally one cube per cup of water will keep the mixture at a premium flavor. Once boiled, allow to cool for a couple hours.

Pour cooled liquid into an ice cube tray and freeze it for upwards of 5 hours.

Give your dog the flavored cubes outside. This will prevent any messes, giving you more housework. Some dogs like to bat their cubes around as they lick them. Others will make short work of them.

Crunchy Puppy Popsicles:Basically the same recipe as above, but add some kibble to the mixture before freezing. If you don't want your dog to immediately remove the kibble, Freeze the liquid for an hour, then add some kibble and add a bit more an hour later.

You can also add small treats to the mix, such as freeze dried liver, cut up biscuits or pieces of plain cereal, such as Cheerios.

Fruity and Veggie Puppy Popsicles:

Here's where you can get real inventive. Many dogs love fruit and vegetables. Many people love fruit in their ice cream, too. Otherwise Banana Splits would not be popular. Cut up some banana, apples, oranges or peaches and add the pieces to the bouillon mixture as it freezes. You can do something similar with vegetables such as broccoli, green beans, carrots or sweet potatoes.

Big Block Ice Cube:This will require lots of open freezer space, but will be well worth the effort as it will occupy your dog for a very long time.

Take a small plastic bucket that will hold approximately a half gallon of liquid. You can also use an empty half gallon milk jug, but the bucket is better because it will allow you to add interesting 'artifacts" to the big ice block.

Pour a bit of your dog's kibble along the bottom of the bucket or jug. Pour in the bouillon liquid. Allow it to freeze for an hour. Place a few toys inside, such as a tennis ball, a Kong that is filled with peanut butter or other treats, a Bully Stick or a dental chew. Allow this mixture to remain in the freezer for at least 5 hours.

Take your dog outside and turn over the bucket, tapping the bottom until the big block comes out. If you used a plastic milk jug there is the possibility that you may have to cut the jug to remove the ice block.

Your dog will not only be busy plying off the kibble and other easy to get crunchies, but once he removes the food stuffed toys he has another great occupation. This frozen treat can give your pup hours of fun.

Charitable Pet Supply Vending Machine Program

DogToys.com Inc., a West Chester, Pa.,-based pet product distributor, and Charitable Vending Management Inc., of Des Moines, Iowa, have launched a pet supply vending machine program. The joint venture offers individuals the opportunity to use vending machines to raise money for charities.

Through the program, individuals can purchase a vending machine package, which costs $5,300 and includes a vending machine built by Charitable Vending Management, initial stock of pet supplies from DogToys.com, a warranty and technical support. The vending machines will be available for purchase at www.vending4pets.com and pet supplies will be available for purchase at www.petvending.com. Both websites are expected to launch within the next two weeks.

Program participants are encouraged to donate 10 percent of the proceeds to a charity of their choice. The vending machine will be customized to display a decal designating the benefiting charity.

DogToys.com and Charitable Vending Management are marketing the program to their existing customer base as well as animal welfare organizations and anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit.

“There’s just an endless number of places to position these things,” said Jill Gizzio, owner of DogToys.com Inc.

Charitable Vending Management sales manager Bill Fankell added that the program can help pet store owners expand their business and brand name.

“They can use the machine as a billboard and, at the same time, expand their sales,” he said.

This marks the first time Charitable Vending Management, which is a division of The Wittern Group, is offering a pet supply vending machine, according to Fankell. The decision to team up with DogToys.com to introduce a pet supply vending machine makes good business sense, he said, because there are few pet vending machines on the market, compared to soda and snack machines, and the potential profits are greater.

“More profit can be generated because the price of a pet item can be up to $10 and still be acceptable,” he explained. “There’s more money to be made, which means more money to donate to the (charity), and there’s less competition.”

The program is also a nod to Charitable Vending Management’s roots; the division was launched as a way to raise money for animal shelters.

What breed is for you?

Springtime is here, typically when a young man’s fancy turns to love…..or a new dog. Depending on your particular situation - if you live in a house or apartment, have kids, work long hours, have other animals - different breeds have different needs and temperaments. Some questions to ask yourself before you embark on your search are the qualities you are looking for in a dog like demeanor, activity needs, size, coat, etc. For example, if you live in a city apartment and work all day, you are not going to want to get a high energy breed like a border collie.

Of course if your situation permits, adopting a dog or puppy from a shelter or the SPCA is a great way to go and save a furry friend. I know many people who only adopt dogs from shelters with great success. This is a great option if you are looking for an adult dog who is past the obedience, house training, chewing stage (that sounds pretty good!). The breeds that I love (which is obvious) are Boxers, Chihuahuas and Maltese. Some other favorites of mine are Boston Terriers, Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Biewer Yorkshire Terriers. My loves for Chi's started when I got Bubba, my oldest chi. He was my little baby! I got him when he was 4 wks old and I had to bottle feed him. He was so adorable and so tiny (he could fit in my pocket), so we added to our family Coco Chanel and Armani. I didn't really think of owning boxer until I saved Bruno from some people that were not so nice to him when he was 3 months old. OMG - he was so adorable when he was a puppy and is still so cute. He learned tricks so fast and I knew that him and I would be the best of beds. And me love for maltese grew because I talked with so many maltese mommies on Facebook and grew to love the maltese breed from their experiences. I know that Dolce isn't full maltese, but she sure does act like a maltese. She is maltese/shih tzu mix. She is such a diva and will definitely you that she is.

Birthday Weekend Fun

Wow! We had such a busy, fantastic weekend! So, to start off the festivities, Friday night I made homemade dog treats for party favors and pup cakes for the pups on their big day! I made coconut dog treats (recipe provided by Melissa at Two Palm Beach Pups), that were cut into heart shapes and Honey Crunch pup cakes, topped with pink yogurt chip icing! They came out better than I thought they would.

I wanted to share the Honey Crunch Recipe with you all! It is amazing.....taste bland to us, but the pups devoured them!

Ingredients

2 3/4 cups water

1/4 cup organic honey

1/4 teaspoon vanilla

4 cups whole wheat flour

1 cup granola (we went and got organic granola from New Seasons)

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 egg, beaten slightly

Directions

Preheat over to 350 degrees. Spray muffin tin with cooling spray (I just put little cupcake cups in the muffin pan). Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly. Combine dry ingredients in separate bowl. Add wet to dry slowly, scraping well to make sure no dry mixture is left. Pour into muffin tins. Bake for 15-20 mins or until toothpick inserted into center comes out dry. Store in a sealed container. Makes around 12-14 pup cakes.

Yeahhhh....Saturday, the big day! We gathered all the presents, pup cakes, decorations and last but not least us and the birthday pups and their brother and headed over to Kelli's (Owner/Designer Cody & Company Pet Products) house. Kelli had an amazing setup when we got there - she had the people food set out - varying from cut up fruit, chips, veggies and dip! 2 tables outside waiting for people and pups to surround them and her yard freshly lawn mowed and looked so cute! We brought all the stuff in from the car and started decorating. I went and got all HK everything that I could (purchased at Party City)!

To go with our Birthday theme this week, here is a yummy birthday cake just for your best furbabies!

Yappy Birthday Treats

Ingredients

1/2 cup peanut butter

1/2 cup mashed banana

1 large egg

1/2 cup wheat germ

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

Carob Frosting

1 cup carob chips (can be found in health food stores)

1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine peanut butter, banana and egg in a large bowl. Stir well. Gradually add wheat germ and whole wheat flour. Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut with cookie cutter. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

Carob Frosting: Places bones on wax paper. In a double boiler over simmering water, stir carob constantly. When carob has softened, add oil. Mix well. With a spoon place a stripe down each bone or however you want to decorate the bones. Be careful not to overheat carob as it will harden. Place in refrigerator for 15 minutes. ENJOY! Makes 2 dozen.

Sun was out and warm today! First I had a senior photo shoot down at Tanner Springs Park, the most amazing park. They have this really cool structure there surrounded by water and greenery. The perfect place to relax and read a book and then I took advantage of the wonderful day to do some shopping for Coco, Dolce & Breezy's birthday pawty coming up next weekend! First stop Furever Pets, one of my favorite pet boutiques to shop at in Portland. They have the cutest things there, I got some small toys and treats for the pups! Next stop, Pets on Broadway, I ended up buying more treats and toys for all the little babies! After that I headed over to Michaels to pick up some cup cake stuff and a basket. I don't know what it is, but every where I go I end up finding HK stuff! LOL!

Now relaxing at home, going through photos from earlier and watching tv. I hope you all are having a wonderful day!

Well summer hasn't exactly arrived here in rainy Oregon, but I know I am ready for some warm weather and traveling. We bring our pups every where with us and I was googling places that you can have your pups with you. I found this top 10 pet-friendly vacation desitinations and thought I would share with you all, in case you couldn't think of a place to visit!

Check out the list and see if there is something you would be interested in:

1. The YMCA of the Rockies. Nationally recognized as one of the country premier vacation destinations, the YMCA of the Rockies has two pet-friendly vacation locations in the Colorado Rockies. The Estes Park Center offers beautiful trails for canine-friendly hiking and every Friday during July, a Yappy Hour is hosted for canine guests. Yappetizers and doggy drinks will be served and special guests will give presentations on subjects such as canine nutrition, obedience and agility, and veterinarian advice. At the second location, near Winter Park, dog owners seem to love the serenity of Snow Mountain Ranch and the wide variety of trails available for them and their pets.

Both locations offer a wide variety of activities exclusively for humans, including mini golf, disc golf, swimming, fly fishing, rafting, horseback riding, guided hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park, arts and crafts centers, day camp programs, and family nature programs.

2. Victorian Inn. Perfect for a delicate doggie's sensibilities is the Victorian Inn, in Monterey, Calif. The historic inn offers a pooch-friendly package that comes with two treats: "Love Me, Love My Dog" includes cozy, specially designed accommodations for two humans and one hound, souvenir water bowls, tail wagging doggie snacks, a beach toy; and for the pet owners, continental breakfast buffet and an evening wine and cheese reception. Each room has a fireplace — the perfect place for pooches to curl up and nap.

Near to shops and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and with its wide open, pet perfect beaches, extensive oceanfront walking paths and dog-friendly attitude, Monterey is the epitome of a dog's life. Plus, your adventures might win you a prize. Each month, the hotel's staff picks one favorite "Fido-in-Monterey" photo for a complimentary one-night stay at the Victorian Inn. But the Victorian Inn does more than just give weary travelers a respite, it also helps homeless animals. Ten percent of every "Love Me, Love My Dog" package is donated to the SPCA for Monterey County.

3. Canine Club Getaway. Described as the "Club Med for Dogs," Canine Club Getaway only happens in 2010 from June 2 to June 6 at Lake George, NY. The all-inclusive, resort-style 4-day getaway holds dozens of activities daily, such as swimming — where dogs are allowed in the pool — agility classes, hiking, Frisbee, lure coursing, flyball, doggie skateboarding, canine CPR, as well as "barks and crafts."

In addition, there are daily seminars by expert trainers and veterinarians on topics including Emergency Canine First Aid, Dog Psychology 101 and Training Fusion. While dogs are allowed everywhere — from seminars to the bar and dining areas — plenty of "human friendly" activities are offered: horseback riding, country line dancing and an on-site spa.

4. Su'ruff Camp. In Cali, the surf's up and for dogs, that means the Fifth Annual Dog Surfing Competition! As part of Loews Hotels' award-winning Loews Loves Pets program, the May 22nd surf event is raising money this year for the San Diego Police Department Unit. Through the course of the "surf dog" weekend, a special room rate applies — plus, all surf dogs receive a pet placemat, food and water bowls, dog tags, treats and scoop bags. For entering the competition, doggie contestants get surf shorts or a bandana.

But if you can't make it out for the May event, Coronado Surfing Academy offers doggie surf lessons nearly year round, in partnership is Loews Coronado Bay Resort.

5. Unleashed Dog Parks. If someone said "doggie park" and "summer vacay" in the same sentence you may be less than enthused, but Unleashed Dog Park isn't your ordinary doggie playdate locale. Located in Dallas, Texas, it's a giant (at 50,000-square feet of special K-9 turf) indoor dog amusement park. As the nation's first indoor, off-leash play park, it also offers shopping, dining and dog services, such as "paw-cures" and blueberry facials for both owners and pets. With day care services also provided, the family can get out and enjoy the nearby lakes and water parks, as well as other tourist attractions in Dallas.

6. Queen Mary 2. Known as the largest passenger vessel currently sailing the seas, the Queen Mary 2 is also reported to be the only cruise which allows pets to join their owners on deck. Operated by Cunard Line, the "Pets on Deck" program offers Queen Mary 2 canine passengers fresh-baked biscuits at turn-down, a choice of beds and blankets, and even a QM2-logo coat. The kennel program is overseen by a full-time kennel master, while the kennels and adjacent indoor and outdoor walking areas are open throughout the day, so guests can spend time with their pets.

But the program is not just for dogs. Cats are invited too, and either sort of pet will get a portrait with their owners, a crossing certificate and personalized cruise card.

8. EPIC Hotel. Fees here and there add up when travel plans include the family pet, yet, in downtown Miami, Kimpton's EPIC Hotel doesn't see the four-legged family member as an extra cost: Pets stay free! Various pet-friendly services and amenities are available including restful accommodations in a luxury guestroom; VIP (Very Important Pet) amenity; pet bowl and pet bed; leash and plastic bags for dog walks; as well as pet sitting, grooming, walking and massages.

If your suite needs even more puppy love, Kimpton's Guppy Love Program is available at EPIC, where guests can request a live goldfish to stay overnight in their guestroom, never worrying about caring for their fishy friends because hotel staff provides daily feedings and care.

9. Colorado Springs. Yes, the Colorado city and the surrounding Pikes Peak region has been named one of the nations pet-friendliest by Men's Health and Forbes.com. Boasting of mountain scenery chalked full of trails and open spaces, the destinations screams adventure and is home to seven dog parks. Pet-friendly accommodations exist for both dogs and cats, while attractions and activities run the gamut, including Buckskin Joe Frontier Town & Railway where pets go where you go, on a horse-drawn trolley into town or on the train ride; Cripple Creek District Museum, Garden of the Gods Trading Post, Historic Manitou Springs and Manitou Cliff Dwelling are all sites, among others, open to leashed pets; and, Wilderness Aware Rafting and Royal Gorge Bridge & Park offer free kennel services while the family enjoys the rides.

With most shops and restaurants being pet-friendly, even offering treats and water, the Colorado Springs region is a pet owner's paradise.

10. Alexandria, Va. For the history buffs, this town is complete with trivia-rich sites that also happen to be pet-friendly. With 15 pet friendly hotels in price ranges to suit most travel budgets, the city offers many seasonal outdoor dining areas for families with pooches, while various tours are completely open to leashed canines, including Arlington Cemetery, George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate and the Torpedo Art Factory Center. Going for a cruise up the Potomac River is also a canine option, as well as a walking tour of Alexandria, a hike on the Mount Vernon Trail and, of course, several dog parks.

Happy Memorial Day everyone! I wanted to share with you a recipe for your pups on this wonderful day of celebration of our men and women fighting for our country. I know in some areas of the US it's getting hot, try these treats to cool your dog down - Peanut Butter & Banana Dog Ice Cream recipe.

Ingredients
3-4 ripe bananas
32 ounces plain yogurt (I used lowfat)
1 cup peanut butter (organic if you have it)

Prepartation
The ice cream just takes a minute to make. Toss the bananas, peanut butter, and yogurt into a blender and blend until it's mixed. Next, pour the mixture into ice trays. You'll need about 5 or 6 trays for this amount. (If you don't have that many available, just pour some of the mixture into a plastic zippered bag and toss it in the freezer to break up when you're ready to serve.) Pop the trays in the freezer and in a few hours your doggie ice cream is ready to serve.

Fun day with Kelli & the girls

Catching up Saturday, Josh, Coco Chanel, Candie (we were fur babysitting this weekend) and I visited Kelli (Owner/Designer of Cody and Company). It was a lot of fun .... she is a fabulous designer and I just love the clothes she makes.

I couldn't stop awwwwwing over Kelli's amazing setup for her sewing room! It was absolutely fantastic. She even had a dog wash room. My dream house for sure! I told her that when all the kids move out and Josh leaves for basic training that I would come live with her and her family! LOL! I adopted her younger daughter Hannah to be my little sister too! :-) We did a lot of chatting and laughing. It was an awesome visit!

Kelli's babies, Stormie, Shimmer and Breezy, had such fun showing off their digs to Coco and Candie .... Kelli's daughter-in-law, P.J., fell in love with Candie so much. I got to bring home some awesome goodies from Kel and the girls - I got this fantastic dog house, that the pups absolutely love, HK harness dresses, and I got some belly bands for my best friend Rebecca!

We totally enjoyed our visit and hope to be able to see them again real soon.

Apple Kissed Peanut Butter Treats

Ingredients

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

1 large egg

1/2 cup peanut butter

1 1/2 cups water

4 cups whole wheat flour

1/2 cup cornmeal (white or yellow)

3/4 cup whole rolled oats

Directions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees

Combine applesauce, egg, peanut butter, and water in a large bowl

Combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Add dry ingredients to applesauce mixture. Mix well, then knead dough on a lightly floured surface until thoroughly mixed.

Roll dough to 1/8 inch thickness, and cut out shapes using cookie cutters.

Place on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake for 50 minutes. Turn oven off and leave biscuits in oven for 20 minutes to harden. Transfer to rack and cool completely.

Store treats in a sealed container in refrigerator.

Yield: 60 treats
